Takasaki Daruma / GUNMA
Create connections and bring good fortune
Takasaki Daruma is a traditional Daruma doll made in Takasaki city, Gunma prefecture.
A distinctive design is that the eyebrows represent cranes and the whiskers represent turtles.
In Japan, it is said that "cranes live for a thousand years, and turtles live for ten thousand years," and they are considered symbols of good fortune and longevity.
There is also a custom of filling the right eye with ink as one makes a wish, and then filling in the other eye when the year has gone by without incident.
