Wabunka tenugui are dyed using the traditional Chū-sen dyeing method, a method unique to Japan. Chū-sen dyeing is done by pouring dye into plain rolls of fabric, creating beautiful patterns. Because the dye reaches every single thread, it does not impair the breathability or flexibility of the fabric, as opposed to prints where a pigment is laid on top of the fabric. This gives tenugui a unique feel, such as absorbing water well, drying quickly, and becoming softer the more you use it. Tenugui dyed with Chū-sen dyeing also have the texture you can only get from something that is made by hand, such as a subtle bleeding of colors and delicate, soft shading. The dye from the threads wears off little by little with each use, giving the fabric a deeper flavor. The joy of developing your tenugui is also part of the joy of Chū-sen dyeing.
