Tsubame-Sanjo / NIIGATA
A group of manufacturing professionals
Niigata Prefecture is known as a leading rice-producing region, but it has suffered from numerous floods since ancient times. In addition, the area is covered with a lot of snow in the winter, which prevents crops from growing.
As a result, people needed to find a livelihood other than agriculture. During the Edo period, the manufacture of "Japanese nails" was encouraged for the developing Edo buildings, and this was started in the Tsubame-Sanjo area as a side job during the winter.
The knowledge and experience cultivated here attracted many people and technologies, and made Tsubame-Sanjo a hub for all kinds of metal processing. Today, the traditional techniques are still passed down as an industry that is recognized worldwide.
