Edo Kiriko Glass / TOKYO
Japanese Beauty in Shadows
Kiriko is a glass craft made in Tokyo. Kiriko means cut glass, and due to its beauty, it is still popular today as a sake cup or glass.
Originally, it was a craft in which patterns were carved into the surface of colorless, transparent glass, but from the Meiji period onwards, Edo Kiriko, which uses colored glass, began to be produced in large quantities.
It features precise and detailed patterns engraved into thin glass. The gorgeous and unique cuts create beautiful shadows.
Since ancient times, Japanese people have had a knack for controlling light using shoji screens and other devices.
Edo Kiriko is filled with techniques that can only be achieved by Japanese people, who have a keen sense for light and shadow.
