Echizen lacquerware is a type of lacquerware craft that has been produced in the Kawada district of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture and its surrounding areas since the end of the Kofun period.
Sabae has had many urushi tapping craftsmen since ancient times, and the area has been blessed with high-quality timber, which has allowed the lacquerware-making techniques to be nurtured. The distinctive feature of lacquerware is that it has an elegant and lustrous surface, created by applying multiple coats of lacquer, while also being lightweight and durable.
